First Steps Nursery is a family run nursery and the Pennington branch, First Steps Private Day Nursery (Pennington) is close to Leigh, Lancashire and has been open since 1999. Our Pennington Branch is a superb purpose built nursery which has been thoughtfully designed to provide full day care for babies and young children, offering secure enclosed indoor and outdoor play area. The premises are equipped and maintained to the highest standards with excellent attention to health and safety. Our Pennington Branch is open from 7.30am – 6.00pm and is situated close to Pennington Park. We also have easy access to the East Lancashire Road and convenient links to public transport, making First Steps a perfect option for commuters.

First Steps Nursery staff comprises of a blend of mature, experienced and professionally qualified nursery nurses and trainees working towards their qualifications. All staff are skilled in expertly guiding your child through the wonders of learning whilst playing. Our staff are dedicated to treating your child with patience, affection, enthusiasm and understanding. Staff participate in ongoing training to constantly progress their own skills and abilities.
Staff are highly skilled and have a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage. They use this knowledge effectively to inspire and engage children in every aspect of their learning and development (Ofsted 2013)
When your child starts nursery, a key worker will be appointed. Your key worker will be responsible for liaising with you on your child’s progress and development. They will be responsible for monitoring your child’s progress and will be happy to speak to you at any time.
Senior management from our parent company, First Steps Nursery (Lowton) offer advice, support and guidance to the manager, Jayne, her assistant Kate, and her staff team, and regularly visit the Pennington site to see all the wonderful things that are taking place. The proprietor, Mrs Sandra Green is accomplished and experienced in the childcare industry and uses her knowledge and experience to guide and support all staff, cascading through a skilled and experienced management team.
At First Steps Nursery we understand that having a baby is the most momentous event in any parent’s life. We understand that you have done everything possible to give your baby the best start in life, and at First Steps Nursery we continue to do this. The baby room is for children from aged 6 weeks to 12 months approximately.

Our cosy baby room caters for all of our babies needs. Through the constant care and support from our qualified staff we aim to create an atmosphere which allows babies to develop and progress at their own pace and grow in confidence. The baby room provides a secure, safe, cosy and well supported space for your special one(s)
Within the baby room we have highly experienced staff whose priority is to follow the home routine of each baby as closely as possible (Staff Ratio minimum: 1:3). We have a spacious play area with a quiet and secure sleeping area. We provide a variety of stimulating activities in a caring and friendly environment in order to promote your baby’s all round development. All planning will be displayed on the room wall for you to view and see what activities and development your child will be participating in each week.

The staff in the Tinies room ensure a happy and caring environment, that encourages sound foundations to be laid for your child’s development. The children in Tinies are from 12 months – 24 months approximately. We provide activities to promote fine manipulative skills and cognitive development
Children in the Tinies Room are cared for under the supervision of qualified and experienced staff (Staff Ratio minimum 1:3). An extensive range of quality toys and activities are provided for the continuing development of your child.
The period in the Tinies Room provides for a smooth transition to the early learning stage by adopting a more challenging and varied approach to the day. This will include such activities as painting, sand and water play, music, physical activity and much more. This may sound a little complicated for young children but it is possible for an eighteen month old child to play with sand and water or create a mini masterpiece with paint and they love it!

In our early learning room we have an established and well organised routine, which ensures that children have the opportunity to an excellent variety of activities and experiences, to promote all round development. The Early Learning Room is for children aged 24 months – 36 months approximately.

Our Pre School room have staff who are experienced and qualified, they ensure a friendly and stable environment for children. The children are in the Pre School room for the final academic year before they start school.
The main priority is to provide a full and stimulating programme of educational activities using The Early Years Foundation Stage, and for the children to learn through their play.
We actively promote:
First Steps Nursery is recognised as a Pre- School Centre by the local Education Department. Your child will progress to the Pre-School Room at around 3 years of age (Staff Ratio: 1:8).
We are dedicated to providing a variety of learning opportunities for our Pre-School children. We pride ourselves on ensuring that when children leave the nursery to move on to school, they do so independently and confidently, whilst taking with them a love of learning and a pride in their achievements.
We strive for your child to be able to have the following skills when leaving the nursery:
Children spend time with our Qualified Teacher who is based within the Pre School Room to help prepare them for the transition to school.
Effective teaching is in place and a range of strategies are used to support children’s learning. For example, nursery staff have attended ‘Every Child a Talker’ and ‘Elklan’ training. These initiatives support children in becoming confident communicators. Therefore communication and language skills are enhanced.(Ofsted 2013)
At the end of each year, children take part in a graduation ceremony where they are photographed in a mini cap and gown both individually and as a class.

We love to get outside at First Steps, where we have a large outdoor play area. We provide a rich and varied environment which supports children’s learning and development. This gives children the confidence to explore and learn in secure and safe, yet challenging, indoor and outdoor spaces.
Our children enjoy playing on our climbing frames, cars and bikes! We have safety flooring covering the play area.
We believe there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing, and so we ask parents to provide their children with appropriate clothing for all types of weather from wellington-boots to sunglasses.
